Two openings, in balance
A roof needs air coming in low at the eaves and leaving high at the ridge. Intake and exhaust have to be roughly balanced; more exhaust than intake simply pulls conditioned air out of the house.
What happens without it
Trapped heat cooks the covering from underneath and takes years off it. Trapped moisture condenses on the deck, and over enough winters that softens the sheathing. In cold climates it is also what turns roof snow into an ice dam.
Why it gets skipped
It is invisible, it is not on the brochure, and it makes a quote look more expensive next to one without it. It is also, hour for hour, the cheapest way to make the next roof reach its rated life.
